I haven’t been out shooting as much as I would like to lately. Nor have I been posting “Where I’m At” much either. Last night I went out with @AndrewS_W and @Alex_Neri to adventure into the decayed depths of a local industrial park. The results I’ve published are from a series of long exposures and my personal favourites. As always, enjoy what you see. Until next time…

You can find the rest here.

Shake x Game ft. Travis Barker Prod. Pharrell

What just happened. Was that a vintage 60’s jive beat being rapped over by the Blood of a gangster, tattoo faced, thug rapper The Game. Oh Pharrell, you know how to “Shake The Game up” [double pun not intended]. If this is whats to come from Skateboard P [Pharrell] and Mr. The Game, than you can catch me in the record store on the day of release.

    Proceed II x The Roots

I’m not sure of any details for this track, but @AndrewS_W sent it to me, to check out. Another flawless live performance from The Roots. Apparently it’s from The Jon Stewart Show. Enjoy.

Tiger Mountain Peasant Song (Fleet Foxes Cover) x First Aid Kit

I’ve been showing this song to all my friends and even my family lately. These 12yr old sisters cover a Fleet Foxes track, get 1.3 million views on youtube, and steal the hearts of every single viewer. I think I prefer this version over the original, and I love the original.

Check out the video here. You’ll never get your heart back.

    Valentino x Diane Birch

I have a thing for female musicians. It’s not that I necessarily prefer them to male artists. I think it’s just that females typically do more “solo” acts, whereas male artists are typically part of a band. I think my shallow point has been made. Enjoy.

HOME x Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes.

I’ve been really into this song for April so far. It’s just an upbeat happymaker, that makes everyone around want to whistle.

To me it’s about how comfortable love makes you feel, and how we find and realize that comfort. Listen Up. Enjoy.

I’m so glad it’s spring now, and no longer winter. People are happier, smiles are more plentiful.

I ordered a new Nikon D90 on Monday. I’ll be excited when it gets here after the weekend. I can’t wait to make little videos like this.

Pharrell Williams, commonly known for his musical efforts as an artist, and producer has stepped into the realm of industrial design. As always Mr. Williams struts his unique style, and talks about his newest piece, which is basically an Emes chair with tank tracks.

    His explanation… is just.

In this interview/ artist’s statement, I can really understand where he is coming from with is statements regarding young people in the war. They are in war for many reasons, all of which are their own and not ours to judge. I can also appreciate that sort of outlook generally in life, not just war. I guess that all comes back to the term - “To each his own.”

A little world at the mercy of your finger. Godfinger.

I browse the app store every once in awhile looking for something new to screw around with. Last week I found Street Fighter IV. This week I got really lucky, I discovered “Godfinger”. It’s basically a roleplaying game, and you are god. You use your finger to navigate your planet as it grows at your control. As you level up you get access to more buildings, followers, and power-ups. Followers are the people that populate your planet, and you can give them different roles such as harvesting gold, worshipping your shrine, or constructing buildings. You control the energy to the buildings and followers with sun and rain, and you gain energy by being worshipped. That’s the basics, and there isn’t much more to it. I like the fact that I can play for 5 minutes, and be done for an hour or two, and get a notification if resources are low, or harvests are rotting. It keeps going while your not around, and sends push notifications to keep me in the loop. It’s not a demanding game, but it is quite fun once you get going. I was hard pressed to find a roleplaying style game before this, but this has filled the desire quite adequately. You can find it in the App Store for FREE.

    Nuevo Vallarta, MX

I’m currently sitting in the aisle seat of flight 3213 taking me from Nuevo Vallarta where I just spent the last week basking in sun, to Calgary - The halfway point on this return home. Back to the confines of the “nine-to-five“. The ‘artificially lit mega-center’ of modern suburban society. Seven days now seems like more of a tease than a vacation. Especially as the beverage trolley nudges my elbow for the umpteenth time, and the ‘bro’ ahead of me leans his seat back to it’s fully-reclined position leaving me in the least ergonomically ideal arrangement. Nonetheless, all I can do is reminisce on the past week, and the pleasures that it held. Pics after the break.

Here are a few pictures from the trip, and make sure you check TILLEY.ME for the rest!

February was a slow, uninspired month. Outdoors are grim, morale is low, sales are down, and I am busy working at a job effected that. I didn’t shoot enough, I didn’t think enough, and in the end I was unproductive. On a happy note, I turned 19 on Feb. 26th, which means I am legally allowed to buy and drink alcohol, but I don’t so I guess it’s just another year.

March will be different, I am off to Mexico this thursday, and presuming my camera doesn’t sell this week, I will get some great photos I’m sure!

The other night was my friend Fraser’s birthday. The next night a few good friends got together, played some pool, and had a great time. Here is a quick video I made to document some of the night. Enjoy!

    What Does it Take?

I subscribe to Esquire, I pick up GQ monthly, and read fashion blogs, tech blogs, and every type of blog that could possibly inspire me to want “things”. Every little boy dreams of owning a big house and a fast car, but do we actually know what it takes? The simple answer is - “Only millionaires have those things”. That is probably true, or at least $300,000+ gross incomes, but it’s not a realistic goal to set.

When I say the word ‘millionaire’, what flashes through your mind, or better yet - Who? I bet it’s hollywood, NYC, business tycoons, celebrities. Was I right? Probably. Real life isn’t like that. If 100 of you are my age, I bet in 10 years at the most 1 of you will have an established name nationwide. Chances are none of you will*, just because statistically it is very improbable. What is more probable is that you will have an established name in your community, or industry. This is something that can be just as fulfilling, and could have an equal pay off.

So here I sit. Still curious as to how much it takes to get to the top. I still wonder where the top is. From where I am now, I can’t fathom the top. So with that in mind- I might as well just keep going until I’m there, and when I get there - I’ll keep going.

Where do you want to be? What do you want to do?

    Show me your dreams.

*I encourage you to be successful, by “none of you”, I was speaking statistically. Reach for the stars.

I’m 18. I’m still young, expense free, and generally don’t have many responsibilities. For the last 3 years, I have been practically self sufficient. I have payed for all my fuel, clothes, cameras, gadgets, computers, cell phone, and the else. I have a roof over my head expense free, and a full fridge at all times. That said, over these 3 years I have blown essentially every dollar I have ever earned. I have bought 2 Macbook Pros, 2 Nikons, a Canon, and countless other gadgets. I have been shopping 4 times a week in some cases, and used to drive 500 km a week (locally, in school majority). Long story short, I was good for the economy.

2010 is about simplifying. Consolidating. Buying right, and being smart with my finances, and decisions. To start this I’m making a comparison of some small changes that will result in big savings. Feel free to compare my list to your daily life, and see how much the smallest things cost annually.

    _____________________________________________________________

    • Tea 250 times a year.

Starbucks Grande Zen Full Leaf Tea - about $1.75ea. (437.00/yr)

Starbucks Zen Full Leaf Tea box - 6.99/24pk (75.00/yr)

    $362 savings.

    • Eating Out

1.5 times weekly average, and the price of meal is about $6.50 - $507/yr

    McDonalds 1.39 menu - $122.46

    Over $384.00 in savings.

    • Auto

    90L/wk @ 1.00/L - $4680.00/yr

    Carpool with parents - Free.

    savings of $4680.00

    Total saved per year: $5426.00*

Wow, now that I put it that way - I could buy a new camera every year, just with these savings. Think about it, these aren’t huge changes.

*All figures are approximate averages of what I think I am using/paying.

    Pranav Mistry: Sixth Sense Technology.

I won’t explain this in too much depth, because nobody could explain this better than Mr. Mistry.

I will link this back to my post regarding the future of digital media. Mistry brings up a point that I found relative- He said that the digital world should be intuitive to the physical world. This is exactly what I was getting at in my article. The physical and digital worlds should be in sync and connect with the user equally.

    Anyway, enjoy the show!

Lands beyond my own. Cultures that are not mine. Foreign language. I feel naive to be 18 and have no idea how people live in other worlds. I am comfortable, in a home, in a neighbourhood. What about those who don’t have these privileges. I don’t feel sorry for them, I just don’t understand them. I’m sure some cultures envy North America, and our apparent stability, but I look at a lot of places around the world and envy them.

I see Europe, and see how many countries have made vast efforts to be a part of a ‘green’ movement. I see Nomads in africa, living in peace, and free, something at times I want to be a part of. I want to learn of different ways of life. Not in a classroom. I want to be in the thick of it. Immerse myself in something new. Document my journey, and share it with you. Maybe you will do the same.*

rEvolutionary: The Practicality of the iPad for ME.

As per usual I am sitting in Starbucks on my unibody Macbook Pro sipping a ‘Grandé Zen Full Leaf Tea’. I’ve been reading article upon article about Apple’s new mobile device- The iPad. Based on the amount of coverage it has received in the passed weeks I think it’s safe to say that you have seen it, or at least heard of it. For clarification you can find more information herethere, and everywhere. The speculative reviews [not many people have actually seen let alone touched one] are in and the results are mixed. Some people see it as a XL iPod Touch, some see it as a gimped netbook. I see it as opportunity. I see it as a new product that shouldn’t be compared to anything passed. It’s all new, it’s fresh, and the possibilities are endless. One question that I heard time and time again regarding the iPad: “What do I do with it?” I don’t know about you, but I can see many uses for the iPad, and can justify it in many ways. Let’s look at my typical schedule, and how an iPad could settle into it.

I am in Starbucks an average of 5 days a week, for a combined average of about 15 hours. There are days that I wake up, go to Starbucks, and don’t leave until the evening. I use starbucks as my base. If I have errands to run, I start there and eventually find my way back.

To get into town [the hub in which all things in my area can be found or accomplished] I need to travel 25km from my house - a journey I don’t want to have to make more than once a day. When I leave in the morning I have to pack up everything I think I might need for the day, which is likely more than you may think. I pack my camera (a heavy Nikon DSLR), my Macbook Pro, my portable BeatsbyDre headphones, and a change of clothes (for unexpected sleepovers or trips to the cottage). On top of these few items, I also pack a moleskine notebook for scribbles, and a second moleskine that has all my finest photos inside in case I meet someone new that wants to say what I’m all about. Lastly I pack all the necessary cables, batteries, and gadgets I may need for the day. Needless to say at this point - It’s heavy.

Back to Starbucks. “How can you spend so much time there?” Well, for the most part I can do anything at home that I can do at Starbucks [and vice versa]. Starbucks for me is more of the atmosphere I like to work in. It’s ambient, but not distracting. It acts as a center-point for my social life, and a peaceful workplace. With free WiFi I can also work on anything I need to from a desk or comfy armchair. So everyday once I arrive, I pull out my laptop, my moleskine notebook, my moleskine portfolio, some pens, and my iPhone. “To do what?” To browse, read and write articles [such as this], and listen to music. Let’s think about this. I’m carrying around 10-20lbs of tech junk to do three very lightweight tasks.

Let’s look as what I carry, and how I could accomplish the same tasks with less than half the weight.

    What’s in my bag:

    • Macbook Pro w/ AC adapter and numerous other cables
    • Nikon D60 w/ 2 batteries and charger
    • beatsbydre Solo headphones
    • 2 Moleskine notebooks w/ 3 pilot fineliners
    • change of clothes w/ toiletries
    • 2 magazines

Now let’s throw an iPad in there and see how it’s many features, and applications can reduce the amount I need to carry.

    What’s in my bag:

    • Macbook Pro w/ AC adapter etc…
    • Apple iPad w/ AC adapter and external keyboard dock
    • Nikon D60 w/ 2 batteries and charger
    • beatsbydre Solo headphones
    • 2 Moleskine notebooks w/ 3 pilot fineliners
    • change of clothes w/ toiletries
    • 2 magazines

So, where are we now? I don’t need the Macbook Pro anymore, nor do I need all the cables, adapters, and chargers. I don’t need my portfolio, because I can have all the pictures on the 9.7 inch screen. I can ditch the paperback copies of GQ because there is an app for that. Makes sense right?

“What about for the heavy stuff?”

The Macbook Pro is a great mobile powerhouse, but I don’t need that. I need screen real estate, and graphics power. The only way for me to be efficient with my laptop when it comes to post processing is to have it tethered to a 24” display, which isn’t mobile at all. The answer to my efficiency will be…iMac. I can have 27” of pure colourful wonder at my fingertips. I can tether it to my 24” display and almost double the wonder. Loads of power for everything that I need, and when I head into town- I have my iPad.

What a lot of people fail to realize is that the iPad is simple and basic on the outside, but what is fascinating is it’s potential to expand it’s abilities using apps, and accessories. It’s interface allows you to work quickly and easily at accomplishing a multitude of tasks. I’ve just explained how I could use it. How about you? How could save clutter, weight, and time with this revolutionary device?

On The Current State Of Digital Media.

Here I sit, Friday night, and I am at Starbucks listening to the latest offering from Souther Rap Star - ‘Lil’ Wayne’. “Weezy” decided to shake up the “rap game” by releasing a Rock album. Now, it’s pretty good. I mean, I’m happy to listen to it, and I have - multiple times. It won’t win a Grammy or even have a chance at being nominated, but it entertains me, and that’s what counts. That’s what music is.

As I’m sure you’ve heard and seen, there is a lot of frustration regarding the iPad [Apple], the Kindle [Amazon], and the Publishers of the eBooks many of you read. If you don’t here is the lowdown (skip if you know what’s up) :

THE LOWDOWN: Basically Apple isn’t going to have a fixed price on the eBooks offered in it’s digital bookstore. This is completely contrary to Amazon (The #1 in eBook distributors) who restricts publishers to a sliding price chart which only allows publishers to sell at a maximum of 9.99 for a New Release / Bestseller. Long story short, the publishers are essentially threatening to leave Amazon if they don’t follow suit with Apple. Amazon, and Kindle users are in uproar.

So, with that in mind, and with the Lil’ Wayne metaphor let’s sit at a distance and evaluate this. Not from an eBook standpoint. Not from a music standpoint. After the jump let’s look a digital media as a whole.

    The NOW.

I can buy a CD, DVD, BluRay, Book, and Game off the shelf. Or I can buy an album, a movie (HD or SD), and eBook, and a game online and have it downloaded in no time ready to view. As of right now, in most cases it is cheaper to buy online. An album is 9.99, a movie is up to 19.99, and an eBook is 9.99 (Games vary too much and for the purposes of this article games are irrelevant). Physical media is often more money, but we still buy it. We haven’t switched over to digital 100% yet. Why? Because it isn’t perfect. To me the price isn’t a concern. As long as I am not paying more to purchase online then I will continue to do so. What will it take to perfect the digital media store? A total synchronization.

    The SYNC.

Today, we are in the process of a large shift. Online Social Media is on the rise, Offline communication is on a decline. Digital media is part of a similar shift. Digital media sales are on the rise, and physical media is slowing (slowly but surely) As new products and services are created, announced, and released we are becoming more and more integrated into a total online presence, and synchronization is what will help complete the transition. If I buy a book today, and read it tonight, I can give it to my friend tomorrow, and he can pay it forward with my permission, or give it back to me. I can do the same with a DVD, or a music album. Now in a practical sense, while my friends have my property I cannot use it (Ignore the CD/DVD ripping loophole for the purpose of this article). So why not make digital media the same? Why not sell me an eBook (for the same price as the paperback if you’d like) and when I am done with it, I can forfeit my rights to it and ‘gift’ it to a friend, or I can ‘lend’ it to them for as long as they take to read it, and if I need it back, I can ‘take’ the rights back and I will have my eBook back. The same could apply to a movie. With music, I think Microsoft had it right with the music sharing. Lend your rights to an album or a song to a friend, and if they like it after 3 listens they can buy it, alternately if they ‘like’ it you can ‘gift’ it and therefore forfeit your rights. This way, digital and physical would practically be in sync.

    The Sum of All Media.

If we think about rap music, and how it is about the rhythm, the heavy bass, and the rapping then “The Rebirth” by Lil’ Wayne is a brutal rap album. If we think about rock music, and how it is about the structure of song, the band uniting their instruments to create the rhythm, and the dynamic vocals that overlay it all, then Lil’ Wayne still hasn’t really got it. It’s when we listen to it as ‘music’. No genre, no stereotypes. Just as a source of entertainment, that I realize that “Yes, this entertained me therefore it did it’s job”

With digital media we just need to sit back and realize that things are changing, and in order to adapt we need to be open to new ideas, and see things for the big picture. I don’t care whether I have to run to the video store or I can download it online, or if there is any price difference, but I want to be sure that regardless I am getting the same experience regardless of the format I choose.

    NEW FACEBOOK INTERFACE

I have been waiting on a new facebook interface for a few months now. I had seen some screenshots of this awhile ago, but now that it’s here - I’m impressed. It’s a lot more integrated. The previous version seemed like a cheesy toolbar tossed on top of a regular web page. The new style works well through and through. Nav on the left. Suggestions and Reminders on the right. News in the center, and notifiers up top. Seems solid. I’m awaiting the inevitable hate groups that will follow. We’ll see. Later.

He shared many stories of his upbringing, his shenanigans, and his travels. We found an old slide projector, and started exploring his travels through his photographs. This man, is a pilot, a great driver, and a world traveller. He has been very successful in his life, travelled to many lands including Egypt, Switzerland, Holland, and Lebanon and today he resides back in his hometown of Tweed, Ontario. His name is Robert. He has had Cerebral Palsy since he was four years old, and never has that stopped him from accomplishing more than me, and I’m sure many of you reading this. To Robert. It was a pleasure to have met you.

It’s still cool and trendy to help haiti, so if you haven’t done so yet, I would truly suggest it. It’s too easy to do, so there isn’t any excuse. No debit, no credit, no cash, just text the number and it’s billed to your cell phone contract. I’ve donated $15, and every cent counts. Someday this could be us.

→ Text “HAITI” to 90999 to make an instant $10 donation to the Red Cross for aid and supplies.
→ You can also text “YELE” to 501501 to donate $5 to the relief fund.
→ Click the photo to donate any amount online here at the Red Cross’s website.
→ Find a blood drive and, if you qualify to do so, donate blood. You can also volunteer to help with the blood drive, if you do not. You can check the requirements on the Red Cross’s website, linked in the above bullet.
→ Contact your local division of the Red Cross or other disaster relief efforts to find out how you can donate money or supplies, or how to organize a drive for these things at your workplace and/or college. If you’re in high school, a drive may already be being organized — check with your activities office or guidance counselors about how you can get involved.

    Incomplete Manifesto for Growth

From Bruce Mau’s Website: Written in 1998, the Incomplete Manifesto is an articulation of statements exemplifying Bruce Mau’s beliefs, strategies and motivations. Collectively, they are how we approach every project.

    2. Forget about good.
Good is a known quantity. Good is what we all agree on. Growth is not necessarily good. Growth is an exploration of unlit recesses that may or may not yield to our research. As long as you stick to good you’ll never have real growth.

    4. Love your experiments (as you would an ugly child).
Joy is the engine of growth. Exploit the liberty in casting your work as beautiful experiments, iterations, attempts, trials, and errors. Take the long view and allow yourself the fun of failure every day.

    8. Drift.
Allow yourself to wander aimlessly. Explore adjacencies. Lack judgment. Postpone criticism.

    17. ____________________.
Intentionally left blank. Allow space for the ideas you haven’t had yet, and for the ideas
    of others.

    18. Stay up late.
Strange things happen when you’ve gone too far, been up too long, worked too hard, and you’re separated from the rest of the world.

For me it was really hard to choose just a few points for you guys, so I really recommend going to his site and reading the whole list (many times).

I really can realte to the list, and can learn from it aswell. The main things it has taught me is to get out, learn, teach, and do work. It doesn’t matter when, what, where, who, or why. As long as you keep creating and sharing, you will grow and progress. Keep at it, and keep sharing. Here is the link to Bruce’s text. Also consider reading Chase Jarvisarticle on “CREATE. SHARE. SUSTAIN”

    LOVE

It seems to roll off the tongue so easily, yet it is a dangerous word. A word that leads to a staircase, and this staircase has no end. It just keeps going and going and going and going. Every step can feel longer or shorter, but inevidably it makes us stronger, closer, and more willing. More willing to continue, more willing to succeed. Love is life. I’m not even just talking about relationships anymore. I’m talking about every facet of one’s lifestyle. The only things that can make you successful is love. Love for a style, Love for a career, Love for a being. If you don’t Love you won’t grow.

I’m changing me. I’m making me see things I have never seen before, metaphorically, mentally, spiritually, and physically. My mind and soul are being opened to new things everyday.

I’m out at my cottage right now with @AndrewS_W. Tonight we bundled up warm to withstand the frigid winds of West Lake, and ventured out in hopes for some workable Long Exposures. The above is his result. The below is mine.

9am. Recalling times passed. Alone. With a great cup’o’tea.

I love my time with me. It is my moment of truth. It’s the time that I think the most.

Sometimes I’m a hero, sometimes I’m my worst enemy, but my alone time is when I analyze myself and decide which is which.

If there is anything I can wish for 2010, it is that I make more alone time, and that I make the best of it.

Chase Jarvis - Professional Photographer, Inspiration

Chase is a real inspiration to me. I see his photographs, I see his visions, and I picture myself, in his shoes, in 10 years. I love his work, his creative use of lighting, and colour is fantastic. He takes commercial photography to a new level, a place that many of us never thought existed. I just watched some videos on his site. Some quick interviews with his employees. They seem so happy to do what they do. They seem so interested in Chases business, and success, because inevitably - it’s their success too. I’m impressed that he has managed to create such an environment for himself, and his employees. I can’t wait to be as successful as him. Click through to see his website.

It's a New Blog, for a New Year.

In the last year, a lot of things have changed for me. I have developed as a photographer, and a designer. My focus has changed, and I have made some new goals and advancements, to further myself, and my career.

This is my new home. This is where I will post my thoughts, and ideas. inspired.tilley.me is where you can find my daily inspirations, and this will be for the rest. I won’t post here as often, but you can certainly expect regular tidbits to my weekly life.

Here’s to big things, little things, and progression. Combined, these values are unstoppable.

  • Shake x Game ft. Travis Barker Prod. Pharrell What just happened.

  • Proceed II x The Roots I’m not sure of any details for this track, but @AndrewS_W sent it to me, to check out. Another flawless live performance from The Roots. Apparently it’s from The Jon Stewart Show. Enjoy.

  • Tiger Mountain Peasant Song (Fleet Foxes Cover) x First Aid Kit I’ve been showing this song to all my friends and even my family lately. These 12yr old sisters cover a Fleet Foxes track, get 1.3 million views on youtube, and steal the hearts of every single viewer. I think I prefer this version over the original, and I love the original. Check out the video here. You’ll never get your heart back. •

  • Valentino x Diane Birch I have a thing for female musicians. It’s not that I necessarily prefer them to male artists. I think it’s just that females typically do more “solo” acts, whereas male artists are typically part of a band. I think my shallow point has been made. Enjoy. via •

  • HOME x Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes. I’ve been really into this song for April so far. It’s just an upbeat happymaker, that makes everyone around want to whistle. To me it’s about how comfortable love makes you feel, and how we find and realize that comfort. Listen Up. Enjoy. ES&TMZ are playing at the Osheaga 2010 festival, which is SOLD OUT. via •

  • Clock With No Hands x The Roots ƒ Mercedes Martinez Thanks @questlove I’ve been pushing through the final stages of this web design job all morning. All to the the rhythm of The Roots, and this jammer brought me out of the daze. A true beauty.

  • Monster Hit x Shpongle Something about this distracts me from everyday. It pulls me in, and never lets go through the whole album. Find it, Listen to it, Don’t let it get away.
